Sign up for the spelling bee?

No way!

If there's one thing 10-year-old Texan Sophie Washington is good at, it's spelling. She's earned straight 100s on all her spelling tests to prove it. Her parents want her to compete in the Xavier Academy spelling bee, but Sophie wishes they would buzz off.

Her life in the Houston suburbs is full of adventures, and she doesn't want to slow down the action. Where else can you chase wild hogs out of your yard, ride a bucking sheep, or spy an eight-foot-long alligator during a bike ride through the neighborhood? Studying spelling words seems as fun as getting stung by a hornet, in comparison.

That's until her irritating classmate, Nathan Jones, challenges her. There's no way she can let Mr. Know-It-All win. Studying is hard when you have a pesky younger brother and a busy social calendar. Can Sophie ignore the distractions and become Queen of the Bee?

Author: Tonya Duncan Ellis
Illustrator name: Michael Ruolngul

Ages 8-12

A charming and interesting tale middle graders can really relate to! Author Tonya Ellis captures the reality of school life, depicting the bonds and strengths created by guided competitions and rivalry between schools. She offsets this by showing us how Sophie and her little brother enjoy family life and time with their parents, with a little sibling rivalry thrown in. At the same time, this children's book has life lessons to share with its readers as it teaches the values that responsibility and hard work really do earn rewards and make sought after dreams come true!  Jessie Best

Great Book for Any Middle Schooler
As someone with a 10-year niece who is in fifth grade like Sophie, I believe that she would love this book and the rest of the Sophie Washington series by Tonya Duncan Ellis. Sophie is a character that kids will be able to relate to especially with the little sibling/big sibling relationship. So in this story, Sophie is too busy for the Spelling Bee (though her parents want her to do it because she's an excellent speller), but when know-it-all Nathan Jones challenges she is determined to win. It's a nice story with a lot of other elements than just the spelling bee like the wild hog issue and the kids going to regional events. "Queen of the Bee's" book setting is in Houston, Texas. Ellis's writing style is perfection too. So if you know a middle schooler looking for a book to read, tell them to read "Queen of the Bee." Kellie H.

Great Book, Great Lesson
Sophie is a smart girl and she knows that working hard will help you get what you want. In this tale, Sophie finds herself stuck signing up for a spelling bee that she isn't entirely interested in. However, her dedication ends up paying off in many ways. This book is a great lesson for children and will teach them that having a goal and working toward it will bring many rewards. It's a well written, fun book, perfect for kids of all ages. Yvonne Glasgow
